exedy vs. spec?
Thursday, February 03, 2005 12:26 PM
has anyone used an exedy clutch? All my manual cars have spec clutches in them and they are great, but the cavalier is really just a toy and it doesnt have to have a spec clutch.

I run a 50 shot on the cavi, would it be wise to get the spec setup or save 100 and get the exedy for 150.

No comparison here really. Exedy sucks for the j-body. Go with spec.

idk how they are with j body's, but i rode in a then drove my buddies b16 crx with an exedy stage 4 clutch. hes only got the basic bolt ons like i/h/e. the dash looks/sounds likes gonna break. it chirps 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. its a lunitic clutch. makes me with they made them for my eco. but like i said, thats for a honda. i cant speak how they are for cavaliers.

I have an Exedy in the Subaru, I love it. I have a Spec in the Cavy, I love it too. I dunno, I would try the cheaper one. If you're only gonna run a 50 shot, any reputable company's clutch kit should hold fine, and Exedy is defenitely a good company.

Very similar, but I only have a stage I in the Suby. Then again my Spec Stage II feels like the stocker too. It definately doesn't slip with the juice like the stocker though.

hey nitro. could you get like a spec II or III clutch, but get a more aggressive pressure plate? that would be the cause of the more harsher ingagement.

Who said anything about harsh engagement? I said both my cars clutches fell like stock. I suppose you could get a stronger pressure plate, but I personally don't see the need.

i did. my buddies exedy in his crx is lunitic. but i remember reading something on the net about act or bully offering an upgraded pressure plate with their clutch.

^^^^^^^^ but doesn't last as long, and I spray 100 shot on my Stage II without a problem....

Stock internals, no worry here. It takes over 700 passes before things get hairy if everythings done right.

how much less life are we talkin about if both cars are drove equally?? like street and raced every now and then. i know there was another post that said like 25k at the track, but i dont plan on beating on my car every single day. but a clutch that could hold 275 whp would be good. i like the harsh engagement of my buddies exedy, but i dont need a stage 4 clutch.. there is no way i plan on pushing 350whp+

nitro, when you ordered your stage 2, where at and how much? also, was there different pressure plates you could get?

I would think the street driving would lower the life of the clutch for all the stop and go, where as on the track; other than launching you use too much clutch

Carcustoms.net Talk to Karo and he'll give you the lowdown on the clutch life expectancies.

Oh, about 15K. Last time I had the trans out, it still looked like new.

so 15k on it with 75 and 100 shots. not slippage at all yet?have you had any problems? what made u go with a stage 2 instead of a stage 3???
Re: exedy vs. spec?

I have 30,000k on my spec stage III. I know there were others that complained about how the clutch makes a horriable scraping noise when you feather the clutch out . But i just put the stocker back into tonight because one of the springs on the spec popped out and started grinding between my clutch plate and aluminun flywheel and i also noticed that most of the retainers (metal flaps) that hold those spring in were grinded off. Needless to say....i hope they warrenty it because that's just poor. I knew i should have gone with the spec II like i had orginally planed. Please don't go higher then stage two unless you allready have turbo or a massive shot of Nitrous.

No problems what so ever, and I already said I went with the stage II to get more life out of it. And even if you're running massive N20 shots, I see no reason to go any higher than stage II, unless maybe you're running slicks. But in that case, you'd better have a Quaife diff and stronger axles, or the clutch won't be the weakest link. Come to think of it, even the stage II isn't the weak link in my setup, the diff still is.
